Thai King Bhumibol Fact
Crowned to the Thai royal throne in May 5, 1950, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX is the ninth monarch of the illustrious Chakri Dynasty. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1927. He is the youngest son of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej and is the longest serving monarch in Thai history. King Bhumidol graduated from University of Lausanne and ascended the throne following the untimely death of his brother, King Ananda Mahidol. Married to Queen Sirikit, King Bhumibol is the father of four grown up children.
Regarded by his subjects as a ‘Working Monarch’, Thai King Bhumibol initiated several developmental projects in Thailand, which have led to the peace and prosperity of this nation. During his visit to every single Thai province, he interacted directly with people to gain an insight into their living conditions and problems. After completion of his visits, he initiated steps to ensure that people received the remedy to their problems, either through direct governmental funding and support or through the use of his own funds for assisting the countrymen.
Thai King Bhumibol has a great vision for a modern and democratic Thailand. He has been instrumental in the contemporary resurgence of Thailand. During his 52-year-old regime, Thailand has witnessed unprecedented economical growth.
Thai King Bhumibol is an accomplished jazz musician and composer, sailor, sailboat designer, painter, photographer, scholar, author and translator. Several honors have been conferred on the King, prominent among them being the United Nations Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award. Thai King Bhumibol has received the greatest number of honorary University degrees.
